The Biosphere Reserve Swabian Alb

The Biosphere Reserve Swabian Alb

The completely unexpected decision by the former Minister of Defence Rudolf Scharping in 2002, to give up the military training area Münsingen, has felt the gouvernment of the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg suddenly confronted with the question:
What to do with a 6.700-acres site, located in the middle of the country, shielded from public view and used only militarily since 110 years?

Soon the idea of a "biosphere reserve" was born, which should be based on the provisions of the UNESCO. And so the thing began to take shape. Many of the surrounding cities and towns for various reasons, wanted to be here (but some not) and so the first Biosphere Reserve in Baden-Wuerttemberg was officially founded on 22/03/2008. However, it was called "Biosphere Reserve Swabian Alb".

The reserve covers an area of 85 300 acres. Map download here [683 KB]

And on 26 June 2009 the UNESCO recognition was handed over to the State of Baden-Wuerttemberg. These award winners have received so far only 580 territories (08/2011) around the world!
